The Cult of Me

How Social Technologies Saved the Story

I started teaching summer school on Monday -- and part of my beginning of the class spiel is this: if you plagiarize anything, I will make it my life's mission to get you expelled from school in as short a time as possible.

Harsh? I don't think so. The real world is not forgiving on this matter. Take it from me. I had some first hand experience with this when I was the senior editor and web producer at TechnologyReview.com.

Netizens know, though, that information is a bit more tricky in a linked world.

There's a great discussion going about a disgruntled writer claiming Ars Technica stole his idea without proper link attribution.

Read the piece -- if you have time -- and then let me know: how do you properly link? What's the etiquette? I've never included a name and article title -- am I doing it wrong?

I have no earthly idea after 24 years of being online. Help...
